I'll never....

....be a tremendous climber. I don't think I have it in my genetics. That and I'm a bigger cat, at 6'4", 300+ pounds. No illusions of Cat 4 grandeur, here. At this point, I don't even care what the scale says. I just want to be healthy and happy. To make that a reality, I'm looking for four things to happen in the next 6-8 months.

1. Acquisition and assembly of a bicycle that can stand up to the love I am capable of generating:

Love=power * leverage. I've trashed numerous bikes and wheels over the years. The most recent fallen soldier being a Soma Double Cross. Nicely built Tig welded frame, just no match at the bottom bracket for the big fella. The next one to go is my current ride: a totally rad Surly Long Haul Trucker. Which I rode/walked (maybe walked/rode) over the hills (mountains) of Marin, Sonoma, and Napa Counties last August. Phil/Dyad wheelset (36f/48r), 42mm rubber, rack, bags, lights, platform pedals and a sweet bell. Sadly, it's just a matter of time. I know it. The BB sways like nobody's business when I pedal normally, not to mention the swang I get going when climbing out of the saddle.

This trucker's days are numbered.

2. Creation and execution of a cycling/fitness/food routine through the winter and into the spring/summer season.

I have never lost or even maintained weight over the winter. Never in 36 years. This year that changes. I am commuting 10 miles to and from work now. I have winter gear. No problem. I think I have my food in order. My brother used to say, "I think we have a intake valve problem" when referring to our eating habits. Gotta get my intake valve fixed and get good food choices going to match the exercize I'm getting.

3. Elimination of most if not all mechanicals and other silliness having the potential to interrupt 1 and 2.

I will take the time to acquire the right, over-engineered frame, parts, etc, and give myself the best possible chance at breaking that winter weight gain cycle I've been on for years. This will be the year. No band (I'm also a composer/musician), no interruptions, no distractions, no funny business. I'm going to build a freaking TANK to ride, and pedal like a madman.

4. Maintenance of a good level of fitness, ready to ramp up to a great level of fitness in preparation of the STP (Seattle to Portland) Ride in July.

Everyone needs a fitness goal, and this is mine. Two back to back centuries (STP) with a couple of days of touring in and about Portland on either end of the trip.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm going to use this blog as an outlet for documenting how the four above things come to pass. I'll post bike stuff, health stuff, exercize stuff, music stuff, family stuff or anything that comes up along the way.

I hope whoever reads this, finds it interesting and not self-indulgent crap. Maybe it'll inspire someone to make some badly needed changes in their life.

I'm going to enjoy this, and I hope the joy shows in the writing.

Cheers,
